My highly biased thoughts on the subject....

In this modern day and age it seems strange to me that people still look to religion for answers. In the times of chemistry, biology, psychology, physics, iPods, LCD televisons and trips to the moon, the notion that some human beings still cling to religion is something that I just can't come to grips with.
Back during the American Civil wars, medical care consisted of getting the patient drunk to dull the pain and getting them to bite down on a piece of wood while a limp was being amputated. It's fair to say that we have come a long way since then. The same can be said, I believe, for religions. They had their uses back in the day, but the time for such silliness has passed and we, as evolving humans, need to just forget it and move on to bigger and brighter things.

A page on Freethoughtnation states that one in four Americans believe that religion is outdated. The article itself is uninteresting, however the pages of comments that have stemmed from it are highly thought provoking. People discuss the fact that there seems to be more discrimination against Atheists than anything else, and that 'free thinkers' are looked down upon.

Bringing things a little closer to home, the Destiny Church here in New Zealand is a prime example of profiteering and hate-mongering that's disguised as a religion. It's clear to anyone with eyes that the founder of the 'church' is simply running a business, not a religion. Then there's their view on civil unions! While the rest of the world is making progress in this area, what does Brian Tamaki do? Arranges a hate march, encouraging intollerence in our children.
Encouraging backward thinking. Taking the progress that has been made in this country back at least 50 years! Do we really want this? A lot of people don't, and good on them for not putting up with it.

Religions seem to be the root of most of humanities issues. The intolerance that is taught within them is sickening. Humans are trying to move forward - to celebrate differences. But because of religions, gay people are still being turned away from establishments! Young women are condemed for doing what they want to with their own bodies! Some people might even go so far as to say that religion is downright dangerous. The Black Athiest puts it all rather well in his blog. And when you look at it, more people have been killed through history in the name of one 'God' or another, than for any other reason. The World Trade Centre? Religious motives. So many of the bombings around the world? Religious motives. The Crusades, for crying out loud! All the goings on in Ireland with the clashing religions! How many families have been broken because people have been too backward and too stubborn to give an inch?

Religion has also been interfiering with the schooling of our children for as long as schooling has existed. Certain religious groups are wanting to replace 'Ethics' in schools with religious studies! As if religions are ethical at all! If religion is going to persist, it at least needs to not be involved in schooling. This is, after all, what 'Sunday School' is for, is it not?

What do you think?

So? Is it?

Hey guys out there in Net Land.

My name is Sarah, and in this blog I will be looking at Religion, and if it has become outdated in our modern society. Enjoy the journey. :)
